System 09 · the warm side
A hydromassage hot tub at 36-38 °C, built into the terrace or dropped into the deck
Jets, an underwater seat ledge and water that is warm every evening, in a tiled basin flush with the stone or an acrylic shell set into a deck. It is the warm side a farmhouse, a rented villa or a club adds when the brief wants company in the water rather than a quick plunge; the pumps, the heater and the filter stand in a plant room that nobody hears from the ledge.

Hot tub, warm pool, jacuzzi-style spa: what this page sells
Indian briefs bring the warm basin in under three names, and the third is a brand word, so we write hot tub: a basin for two to six people at 36-38 °C with hydromassage jets along an underwater seat ledge, filtered and dosed because warm water asks for it, heated from a plant room. It is not the still warm pool of a hot and cold plunge suite, and not a heated swimming pool. A jacuzzi-style tub is the social object of the three: people sit in it and talk.
Tiled and built in, or acrylic and dropped in
| Tiled built-in basin | Acrylic drop-in shell | |
|---|---|---|
| Geometry | Any plan the drawing allows, flush with the stone | The shell's own shape; the rim shows unless the deck is built up |
| Finish | Glass mosaic, porcelain or honed stone, marble coping | Moulded acrylic; the deck carries the architecture |
| Structure | A reinforced shell by your contractor to our drawing | A level base or a frame; the shell arrives whole |
| Where it fits | A farmhouse terrace, a club spa, a hotel villa; the upper half of the range | A rented villa deck, a rooftop with a load limit; the lower half |
The warm side of a pair
A hot tub can take the place of the still warm pool in a pair: a tiled basin with jets beside a cold plunge pool at 4 °C, one ledge between them, one plant room with two circuits. Clubs ask for this version because the jets keep members in the warm water between plunges; the cold side keeps its own plant and its own hold test.
Heat, kilowatts and the evening it is wanted
Warming 2,000 litres from 25 °C to 38 °C takes about 30 kWh: 2,000 kg x 13 K x 4.186 kJ per kg per K, divided by 3,600. A 9 kW heater does it in about 3.4 hours; a heat pump takes longer and uses a fraction of the electricity, which in an Indian ambient is where it earns its place. In a Delhi January the fill can arrive near 15 °C (an assumption; measure yours) and the same tub needs about 53 kWh. The answer in both cases is a cover and a timer: heated in the afternoon, covered when empty, topped up rather than restarted. The jet pump, 2 to 3 HP, runs only while the jets are wanted.
Monsoon, hard water and the chemistry of warm water
- Warm water is the demanding one. At 38 °C the water needs dosing and a filter that turns the whole volume over in well under an hour; a cold pool forgives what a hot tub does not.
- Rain. An open tub in Mumbai or Goa takes hundreds of litres of rain in a monsoon day; the cover stays on, and the overflow and the drain are drawn as part of the tub.
- Borewell water and salt air. Hardness scales a heater element and clouds the jets; a TDS and hardness test before the fill decides between a softener, an inhibitor and a mains fill. On the coast, 316 fittings and a coated coil on the heat pump.
Power cuts: what the inverter carries and what waits for the generator
The heater and the jet pump are the heavy loads; the circulation pump and the controls draw a few hundred watts. On an inverter, only circulation and controls run, and the cover holds the heat through the outage. On a generator set, the heater is locked out unless the set has been sized for it and for the jet pump's starting current, which is a line on the electrical drawing. After a cut the plant restarts on a delay.
Societies, terraces and farmhouse plots
- Weight. 2,000 litres is two tonnes before the shell, the coping and six bathers. A terrace needs the structural consultant's allowance; a ground-level basin on a farmhouse plot is the simplest case.
- The society. A plant room with an exhaust, works on a common terrace and a pump that runs in the evening are the three points an RWA asks about; we put the sound level at 1 m and the plant position on one sheet.
- Rented villas and clubs. In Goa and Alibaug the tub is a listing photograph and a daily duty: a drain-and-refill schedule set by bather load, a dosing log and a cover the caretaker closes. A club sizes filter and dosing for the evening peak, next to the cold pool and the sauna.
Six lines for the BOQ
- Build type, plan dimensions, water depth and volume in litres; seats and the jet layout.
- Water temperature, 36-38 °C, and the heating plant: heater in kW or heat pump with its rated ambient.
- Jet pump and circulation pump in HP; filter turnover time; UV and dosing.
- Plant room: floor area, air path, drain and the pipe run; make-up water with its test result.
- Electrical: load in kW, supply, DB way, residual-current protection, and what the generator set carries.
- Commissioning: flood test, heat-up log and a signed temperature test before the last 20%.
How much does a hot tub cost in India?
Indicatively ₹8-25.5 lakh, installed and with its plant, excluding GST: an acrylic drop-in shell for two at the lower end, a tiled basin for six with a heat pump at the upper. The structural shell, the plant room and the feeder are your contractor's, to our drawing; the firm quote follows the free 3D layout within 5 working days.
Can the hot tub be the warm pool of a hot and cold pair?
Yes. The two basins share a ledge and a plant room with separate circuits; the cold pool keeps its 4 °C hold test. The jets are the difference from the still warm pool of the standard suite.
Can it stand on a terrace in a society tower?
Where the slab allowance covers two tonnes or more, yes, usually as a drop-in shell. The RWA will ask about the plant room, the exhaust and the pump noise; one sheet answers the three.
Where in India is a hot tub used most?
Delhi NCR from November to February, where the mean January minimum is about 7.5 °C (IMD, Safdarjung, 1991-2020); Bengaluru evenings all year; and the rented villas and club spas of Goa, Alibaug and Mumbai, where salt air and the monsoon set the specification.
