A hot spring and a plot that may be rock: Hyderabad villas, clubs and the granite beneath them

Hyderabad's pool problem is not the heat alone. It is a hot April and May above a plot that may be solid rock, so a plunge pool may have to be argued with the ground before it is argued with the sun. The suites below are drawn for both.

April to June: the chiller's hardest weeks

The India Meteorological Department's table headed 1991-2020 puts Hyderabad's mean daily maximum at 38.2 °C in April and 39.7 °C in May, with mean minima of 15.3 °C in December and 15.9 °C in January, and about 860 mm of rain a year. The sun is hard, so a pool gains heat from the sky as well as from the surrounding stone. Shade is the cheapest cooling we know: a pergola over a pool, a screen over the plant, a roof over the plant niche's louvre. We size the plant for a 45 °C ambient, which sits several degrees above the monthly means to allow for sun-baked stone and the hottest afternoons, and we start a new pool days before it opens.

Rock under the garden

The Deccan granite that gives Jubilee Hills and Banjara Hills their boulders can also lie close to the surface of a plot. Excavating a sunken pool in solid rock is slow, noisy and sometimes restricted, so ask early whether the plot is on rock and whether any limits apply to blasting or breaking in your neighbourhood. The practical answer can be a raised pool: the shell sits on the rock, the coping is at deck height, and the boulders become part of the composition. It saves the excavation and keeps the pool's plant above the water table. The layout draws both versions so that the client can compare.

Water quality and the heat exchanger

Borewell or tanker water can be hard, and scale builds on a heat exchanger year after year. Test the dissolved solids and the hardness before the plant is specified, and ask for the descaling interval in writing. In a tub or pool with a hot spring season, an annual descale is cheaper than a replaced exchanger.

Who builds and what they ask for

  • Villas in Jubilee Hills and Banjara Hills. Terrace pools on rock, glass cabins facing the boulders and a wellness room with a free-standing ice bath tub.
  • Gachibowli, HITEC City and the western corridor. Apartment towers, clubs and corporate wellness areas.
  • Hotels and clubs. Hotelivate's 2025 report lists about 7,800 branded hotel rooms in Hyderabad; a hotel wellness floor is drawn for 16 hours a day, and the hospitality page covers sizing.

Why shade is the cheapest cooling we know

On a clear day the sun puts about a kilowatt on every square metre of ground at noon. A round pool 2.0 m across has about 3.1 m² of surface, and water absorbs most of the light that reaches it, so an unshaded pool of that size can take in two or three kilowatts at the peak. That is the same order as the whole output of a small chiller. A pergola, a shade sail or a deep wall shadow over the pool removes most of it, for a fraction of the price of the extra compressor that would otherwise carry it. We draw the shade as part of the pool.

Hyderabad's calendar: the plant's months and the rest

April, May and June are the plant's months and the cold pool's season; the monsoon that follows cools the city; and from November to January the nights are cool enough for a warm pool to be pleasant. We size the heating loop modestly and the cold plant generously, which is the opposite of Delhi.

A rooftop pool in a Hyderabad tower: wind, sun and weight

A rooftop pool in a tower faces three loads at once. The structure carries the water and the shell; the sun, with no tree to shade it, adds heat all day; and the wind lifts spray and carries leaves, dust and heat away from the surface in ways that change the plant's duty. We draw a parapet or a screen on the windward side, shade over the water and a plant room that is not on the roof's hottest corner, and the structural consultant releases the weight before the drawing is finished.

Clubs, clinics and corporate wellness in the western corridor

Around Gachibowli and HITEC City the briefs are for fitness clubs, clinics and corporate wellness areas in towers and campuses. They behave like the commercial buyers on the clubs page: a plant sized for 16 hours of duty at the local ambient, a floor that carries the water and drains that survive a hard rain. In a campus the question of who operates it, a facility team or a vendor, belongs in the brief from the start.

Can a pool be built where the plot is solid granite?

Yes, as a raised pool on the rock. The shell, the coping and the plant are drawn above the water table, and the layout shows the sunken alternative with its excavation question.

Does Hyderabad's heat change the plant?

It sets the design: a 45 °C ambient, shade for the plant and a first pull-down that starts days before opening.

Is hard water a problem?

Where the water is hard it is a maintenance item. We specify filtration for the measured hardness and give the descaling interval for the exchanger.

How much does shade matter for a pool in Hyderabad?

A great deal. In noon sun an unshaded pool of two metres across absorbs the order of a few kilowatts, as much as a small chiller removes. A pergola over the pool costs far less than the extra compressor that would replace it.
